Things to Watch: “Star Wars: Forces of Destiny”
One of the things I was excited about coming out of Star Wars Celebration this year, other than “The Last Jedi” trailer was the announcement of the web series “Star Wars: Forces of Destiny.” New “Star Wars” stories are always awesome, but what really made this special, for me, was that all of the videos would be focused on female characters in the “Star Wars” universe.
Ten videos have been released so far, with more to come, and each run about three minutes in length. They’re self-contained, happening between the events of the films or television shows the characters inhabit. They’re bright, fun, and show our protagonists helping others and overcoming various challenges with intelligence and wit. Most of the original actresses do the voice work, and their knowledge of the characters certainly enhances these new adventures.
Until recently, “Star Wars” movies have always focused on male characters. The prequels were Anakin’s story, and the original trilogy was Luke’s. To have Princess Leia, Rey, Ahsoka, Padme, Sabine, and Hera all getting to a spotlight to themselves is pretty damn awesome, and it’s much needed in a franchise that has just started to make progress in terms of more diverse casting and storytelling.
I’ve talked endlessly on Twitter about how much it means to see female protagonists finally getting to do all the things I wanted to when I was a kid. Seeing Rey with her lightsaber and seeing Wonder Woman climb the ladder and step onto the battlefield in her first film—left me in tears. While these videos might not leave me crying, they certainly bring me, and hopefully others, a great deal of joy. Check them out!
