PAX Prime 2015: Mekazoo!
During PAX Prime, we got a chance to check out “Mekazoo,” which is being developed by The Good Mood Company.
“Mekazoo” is primarily a single-player experience, where the player traverses levels by switching between two animals with unique ability sets. (There are five animals that can be unlocked, and levels are geared toward different animal combinations.)
I’m going to admit right now that I was not very good, but that wasn’t the fault of the game. The controls were easy to pick up and worked well with the challenges presented by the levels. It was the teamwork aspect of the multiplayer that tripped me up. Actually, let’s be honest: I tripped myself up. I didn’t want to ask for help, which led to me flailing helplessly around the screen until my partner rescued me.
The cool thing about “Mekazoo’s” multiplayer mode is that there is only one playable character on screen at any time. The person who isn’t playing can take over whenever they want by pressing a button and switching the animal on screen. This can lead to two very different game experiences; either the players learn to work really well together, or the players troll each other incessantly.
I’m going to make my children play this game together, and I’m going to film them. The footage will either be incredibly entertaining, or it will be used as evidence when one bludgeons the other with a game controller.
“Mekazoo” is currently slated for an early 2016 release with planned availability for Xbox One, PS4, WiiU, Steam, PC, Mac, and Linux.
