Awesome is a color: Espionage Cosmetics unboxing
Espionage Cosmetics is one of my favorite geeky nail and makeup companies.
Espionage creates nail wraps, bath bombs, eyeshadow, lipgloss, and other beauty products based on various fandoms and general nerdiness.
They’ve run a couple successful Kickstarters for their nail wraps—basically high-quality vinyl stickers you press onto your nails. One of the add-ons to the most recent campaign was to get in at the ground level of their subscription box service. I (foolishly) didn’t. So when the chance came to get it on the beta, I threw my money at my computer screen so hard I nearly broke it.
I just got my first box, and it’s delightful. Let’s take a look, shall we?
The box was tiny and adorable. When I pulled it out of my mailbox, I couldn’t wait to see what would be inside.
And (spoiler alert) I was absolutely not disappointed.
The box came with just about everything you’d need to apply the nail wraps, including a nail file. The only other thing you’d need is some rubbing alcohol to swipe across your nails before applying the nail wrap and some top coat. The whole process takes about 10 minutes, which is great for someone like me who always seems to smudge my nails because I don’t take the extra five minutes to really let them dry.
It also had what Espionage calls a nail humidor.
This thing is actually pretty cool. Each package of nail wraps comes with a few extras. The wraps themselves come in different sizes. You pick the one closest to your nail size and stick it on. This means, of course, that you’ll have some left over when you’re done.
That’s where the humidor comes in. It protects and extends the life of the remaining nail wraps until you use them. I got one with my Kickstarter rewards, and it works really well. Eventually, you get enough extra nail wraps to have a whole manicure of different ones, and that’s just delightful.
But let’s get on to the pretties.
All of Espionage Cosmetics’ nail wraps are latex-free, cruelty-free, and 5-free (which means they’re made without the five most toxic ingredients often found in nail polish). Four nail wraps came in this box: two new designs and two Espionage had previously released. All of them are gorgeous, though, so let’s take a closer look.
The pirate wraps, appropriately dubbed Pirates, Ahoy!, are hands-down my favorite. It’s one of the new releases, and I can see myself ordering a ton more of them. There are three designs: a treasure map, red and cream stripe, and a Jolly Roger. Plus, there’s glitter, and they glow in the dark. Need I say more?
Next up, we have For Science, a sparkly riot of fun and science (duh). The wraps are evidently inspired by discharge tube tests done on noble elements. The pretty colors are the result of electricity reacting with the noble gases. Pretty cool, eh?
Metal Man is a glittery orange, yellow, and red riot of color based on Marvel’s Iron Man. They’re super intense and sparkly in person, and they look great on. Plus, who wouldn’t want their nails to look like Iron Man’s suit?
Last, but not least, we have Batty, the final new design released in this subscription box. Batty, as you may have guessed from the name, features stylized bats on them. And I’m not saying it’s inspired by Batman, but it’s totally inspired by Batman. A little. They’re not glittery, unlike the other three; instead, they’re a mix of clear and glow in the dark. Yeah, I’ll be stocking up on these for Halloween—and all the time.
So there you have it! I’ve got two more of these bad boys coming during the beta. Sad you missed out on that beta? Fear not—Espionage has plans to roll out its subscription boxes fairly soon, with preorders starting at the end of the year. They’re pretty active on social media, so check them out.
